Preventive health care tips

Have you noticed it too? It´s sad news I know but the truth is that we are not getting any younger.

You may find yourself in your doctor´s waiting room more often than a few years ago, returning aches and pains are driving you crazy and you can´t eat your favourite junk food anymore, without feeling awful afterwards.  You might be telling yourself that it´s normal, it happens as we age, right? preventive health care, family doctor,

The truth is that there are lot of things you can do to prevent many of your health issues. So, let´s have a look at few basic tips which can help us improve our health, quality of life and maybe even slow down the ageing process a little bit.

  1. 1.Quit smoking

Smoking definitely has a bad reputation and there is a reason for that. Smoking kills. How? There are lots of studies and researches available on this topic. Besides damaging your lungs and clogging your arteries smoking also changes the structure of your skin, increases hair loss, graying, increases risk of digestive cancer, and can cause your bones to become brittle.  If you want to quit smoking, the most important thing is to really make the decision. And if you are not sure if you can make it on your own, ask your family doctor for help. There are plenty of smoking cessation programs available through Alberta Health.

  1. Take care of your physical health

It´s never too late to give your body some “TLC”. Treat your body as you would treat your new born baby. Make sure you feed your body healthy well-balanced diet, strive for at least 50% of vegetables on your plate. Stay hydrated make sure water is the main source of liquid you consume during the day.  Avoid alcohol and processed food, include healthy fats and increase your fibre intake. Go for a walk, start swimming or jogging. Stretch a few times during the day. Have a nice massage or visit a sauna. The options are countless, so try to find those that feel doable for you and also enjoy the journey.

  1. Take care of your mental and emotional health

Slow down. Look around more, smell and touch flowers and trees. Don´t take everything personally. Bring some lightness to your life, you don´t have to carry the burdens of the world on your shoulders. Watch less TV and spend more time with people that you love instead.  Find an activity you enjoy, have fun looking for the right one. Meditate or at least spend few minutes per day by focusing on your breath. Do something new, talk to a stranger, take a different route from work, do something nice for somebody. Clean up, give away things that you don´t need any more and most importantly have fun and be kind to yourself.

There is lots of helpful advice for a better and healthier life out there.  Most of us cannot cut bad habits from one day to the next. There is nothing wrong with taking one baby step at a time to get closer to your healthier self. The main thing is to feel good and enjoy life´s simple pleasures every day.
